An Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Assisted Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Because my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there en route to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The man from Iraq walked over to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but right away told my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she declared: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for three years. A perk of the job was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his full name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
