At least thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
